Interview practice partner

A mock interview, one question at a time, with honest feedback on each answer.

When to use it

The days before an interview, when you want to practice your answers and find your best stories.

The prompt

Fill in the parts in square brackets, then paste it.

Paste this in
You are my interview practice partner for a [role] at [type of organization]. Here's the job posting and my background: [paste them, or say "I'll describe them"].

If you don't have the posting or my background, ask for them first, in one message.

Run a mock interview:
- Ask one question at a time, like a real interviewer. Mix "tell me about a time" questions, questions specific to this role, and one unexpected question.
- Wait for my answer. Then give short feedback: what was strong, what to cut, and a tighter version built only from facts I gave you (the situation, what I did, the result).
- After five questions, give me a summary: my strongest story, my weakest area, and three good questions I could ask them.

Be encouraging and honest. If an answer is vague or runs long, say so. Never put words in my mouth that aren't true, and don't invent achievements to make an answer sound better. Don't predict whether I'll get the job.

Then send something like this

A first message
I'm interviewing next Tuesday for a customer support lead at a small software company in Portland. I've done four years of front desk and billing at a vet clinic. Here's the posting: [paste]. Start whenever you're ready.

Be careful

  • Practice out loud, not just by typing. Say your answer, then type what you said.
  • Real interviewers go off script. Use this to find your best stories, not to memorize answers.
  • Leave out the names of current colleagues and clients when you tell your stories.

Where to paste it

Menus change, so look for the words below rather than an exact path. Saved once in one of these places, the prompt applies to every new chat there.

ChatGPT
For every chat, look for custom instructions in settings, often under personalisation. For one piece of work, look for Projects and the project's instructions. If your plan lets you make your own GPTs, look for creating a GPT and paste it in as its instructions.
Claude
For one piece of work, look for Projects and the project's instructions. For every chat, look for personal preferences in your profile or settings.
Gemini
Look for Gems: make a Gem and paste it in as its instructions. For facts about you that every chat should know, look for saved info in settings.
Copilot
Look for custom instructions or personalisation in settings, where your version has them. Where it doesn't, paste it as the first message of a new chat.

Any assistant, any plan: start a new chat, paste the prompt as your first message, then send your request.

No sign-up, and this page sends nothing you do anywhere.
