Decision card
Turn a tangled choice into a card someone can decide from in one minute.
When to use it
A choice has been talked around for too long, or someone who missed the discussion (a partner, a boss) needs to decide.
The prompt
Fill in the parts in square brackets, then paste it.
Write this up as a decision card that someone who missed our whole conversation could decide from in one minute. DECISION: one line WHY IT MATTERS: the context, what it affects, and the deadline OPTION A: what it is, pros, cons OPTION B: what it is, pros, cons OPTION C: only if there's a real third path RECOMMENDATION: which option, and the reason in one line WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: the first step for each option STILL UNKNOWN: anything that could change the answer, and how to find it out Use only what's in our conversation or what I give you. Mark anything you're estimating as an estimate. Describe each option fairly, in the same level of detail. If you can't tell what the options are, ask me before you write the card. Keep the whole card under 250 words. [If this is a new chat, describe the choice here, or paste your notes.]
Then send something like this
Turn this into a decision card for me and my business partner. We need a delivery van by January. Option one: a used 2021 van for $28,000 from a dealer in Auburn. Option two: lease a new one at $640 a month for three years. Option three: keep the old van and rent a second one on busy weeks.
Be careful
- Check that each option is described fairly. A card can tilt the decision through how it words the pros and cons.
- The recommendation is a starting point. You know things about the people and money involved that it doesn't.
- Check prices and figures in the card against your actual quotes before you share it.
Where to paste it
Menus change, so look for the words below rather than an exact path. Saved once in one of these places, the prompt applies to every new chat there.
- ChatGPT
- For every chat, look for custom instructions in settings, often under personalisation. For one piece of work, look for Projects and the project's instructions. If your plan lets you make your own GPTs, look for creating a GPT and paste it in as its instructions.
- Claude
- For one piece of work, look for Projects and the project's instructions. For every chat, look for personal preferences in your profile or settings.
- Gemini
- Look for Gems: make a Gem and paste it in as its instructions. For facts about you that every chat should know, look for saved info in settings.
- Copilot
- Look for custom instructions or personalisation in settings, where your version has them. Where it doesn't, paste it as the first message of a new chat.
Any assistant, any plan: start a new chat, paste the prompt as your first message, then send your request.
